Walton, a reservist in the 2nd Yorkshire Regiment, has been missing for nearly seven weeks, and an unconfirmed report has been received that he has been killed. Since rejoining the Army he had been promoted to the rank of lance-corporal. For 18 months he had lodged with Mr. George Bates, junior, of Ambergate, who has not had any news of him for seven weeks. Mr. Bates wrote to the soldier’s married sister at Lichfield asking her as to his whereabouts. She replied that she had seen his death reported in the newspapers and that she was waiting for official confirmation of the news. Lance-Corporal Walton had been in Egypt, China and other countries. He was one of the first to rejoin the colours. In civil life he formerly worked at the Ambergate Wire Works and later on the Midland Railway line between Ambergate and Belper, with H. Jackson, foreman platelayer. He is 27 years of age and has no parents.
